Our Beginning

Late in December of 1992, a Marshfield family gave a most generous monetary gift to those who held the dream of what was to become The Hannah Center. The directive was to set up a house where a pregnant woman could come to find refuge, shelter, have a chance for respite, look at her life, and make plans for her future.

On January 19, 1993, twenty-four individuals met at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Diverse ages and occupations were represented. One by one, each was invited to share their observations specific to a pregnant woman alone in our society. A commonality of perceptions was immediately realized. Meetings continued and names for the house were discussed. We wanted a strong name, and finally chose Hannah from the Christian Bible. In reading her story, you realize that much of her experience of being a woman in her time is similar to being a woman today. (Read the story of Hannah in I Samuel)

Months of planning began, and other individuals were consulted. At our attorney's advice, The Hannah Center was set up as a boarding facility to enable refuge for a broad spectrum of ages and backgrounds. We decided no federal or state monies should be accepted, believing that support for this mission should come instead from individuals and organizations. A large, comfortable house at the corner of Third Street and Cedar Avenue in Marshfield lay vacant. Two members of the local St. Vincent de Paul Society negotiated a favorable offer to purchase, and then offered the fledgling Hannah Center Board the opportunity to continue negotiations. The Society donated the $1000 of earnest money.

The Hannah Center opened her doors on June 1, 1993. Her primary purpose has been, to provide options for a pregnant woman who can no longer remain in her home environment. We have since expanded our vision to help ANY woman in crisis, pregnant or not. Over 200 women of many backgrounds and walks of life have called The Hannah Center their home.

This program focuses on setting and achieving long and short term goals, support, advocacy, LifeSkills Classes and much more. This program will assist each woman to create lasting positive changes in her life and the lives of her children, setting them up for a happy and healthy future. Length of stay for this program is individualized, and is based on the resident's progress and achievement of her goals. There is an intake process for acceptance into this program and can take up to two weeks (dependent on your ability to meet with our Program Coordinator) to be accepted into this program.

  • The Hannah Center also offers a one room Urgent Housing Program (UHP). This program is designed to meet the basic needs of a woman and her child(ren) in an urgent housing situation.
